Structure of Sony Music
Sony Music Entertainment, better known as just Sony Music, is an American global music conglomerate owned by Sony and incorporated as a general partnership of Sony Music Holdings Inc. through Sony Entertainment Inc., a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America, which in turn is a subsidiary of the Japanese Sony Corporation. Quite a long path of companies... just as long as its history.
About Sony Music -
It was originally founded in 1929 as 'American Record Corporation'. As of 1938, it was then renamed as Columbia Recording Corporation, following its purchase by the Columbia Broadcasting System. In 1966, the company then became CBS/Sony Records due a reorganisation of Columbia Broadcasting System due to only having rights to the name in North America. Then in 1987, Sony acquired CBS Records for US$2 billion. CBS Inc. , now known as CBS Corporation, retained the rights to the CBS name for music recordings but granted Sony a temporary license to use the CBS name, and Sony Corporation fulfilled the purchase of the company in 1988, then renaming it under its current name in 1991 - Sony Music Entertainment.
